Greatest Rap hiphopper of All Time

March 9th marks the death of who many say is the greatest hip hopper of all time. The narcotics-abusing, womanizing, criminal - the Notorious B.I.G.

Not of infamy I subscribe to another view. The greatest hopper of the hips is the famous Shakira.

pfft! True rap is dead since mid 90s, imho. Nowadays hip-hop culture is no better that manufactured boybands in 90s. It's even worse.

For me this day is the day when 20 years ago one of THE greatest albums EVER was released - U2's The Joshua Tree.

Never heard The Joshua Tree? I recommend downloading and taking a listen. Thank you for the great big smile when I read “When I was younger” :D Your still a baby, only 19! My god I would sell my soul to be that age again! Check out Billie Holiday if you want to know what real music is all about or the Grateful Dead. Yes I know two different extremes but both great music, much better then 2Pac :D

Most of the current American stuff is crap at the moment. It's far too money driven. Everyone seems to be putting their own vocals on the same backing track and calling it their track.
The uk scene is really good right now. Dizzie rascals new album is brilliant.

RE: TRUE LOVE IS

Love. Love is the greatest gift God ever gave man. Love is not wanting to go anywhere without her. Love is not caring what other people think about the two of you. Love is when you feel depressed and sickly when you're not with her. You feel like your life has no meaning or purpose without her. And that if she wasn't holding your hand you would float away to heaven from where she came. Love is caring for her physically and emotionally. It's telling her everyday, anytime, anywhere, anyhow, for no just reason that you love her. Love is telling her u want to spend the rest of your life with her. Love is wanting to marry her even tho ya'll haven't been dating that long. That you would do anything and everything for her. It's the feeling that you would give up everything just to see her smile or look into her beautiful eyes or hear her soft, soothing voice. Love is pure happiness. Love is the feeling you get when all you have to do is think of her and it brings a smile to your face and a yourning to your heart. Love is not being able to think about nething but her. Love is having the sweetest dreams about her and waking up with a smile on ur face. Love is an overwelming feeling of pure bliss when the 2 of u kiss. Love is wanting to hold her in ur arms till the end of time. Love is wishing ur time with her never ends, that your lips would be locked together forever, that she'd be in ur arms till the end of time, that u could cuddle with her for all of eternity. Love is being helplessy and deeply in love with her and knowing your love for her and your feelings for her will never change/end. Love is the world, the world is love, and she is the world to me...

either take her in marriage and watch for her, either leave her alone to work.yes it can be more then simple work,it can be friendship,it can be fun.If you work someplace you'll know that the employee may get ure atention as friends not only as cooworkers.if you dont likeher to have friends, take her and watch for her urself

Reply

RE: about fliring girls

IMO the first step in curing it is admitting it's YOU with the problem. congrats. now you have to ask yourself 1 simple question"do you trust & believe in her?"if the answer is yes, then you must then have the strength to live with your belief.it wont stop over night but if you trust your instincts about her it will happen.if you can't then the honorable thing to do is.... the decision is yours because if you continue to be jealous you may lose her.

RE: about fliring girls

so as you are a member who has romantic feelings for a host is it safe to assume that you only ever go to her room to chat or for videos? and only chat to her in comm chat without deciding to look at the profiles (and semi-nude pictures) of the other girls in comm chat? if you are looking at other women then surely you have no right to feel jealous or annoyed that a girl you met on what is basically a porn site is working and doing adult shows for others on that porn site?
if she has a good personality and is attractive then obviously she is going to be busy here and surely you would expect her and her customers to be friendly and have a laugh and to presumably do rude things on video.
she is at work trying to earn money and so as long as you trust her i cannot see that you can be displeased at what she is doing - after all if you fell in love with someone working here and you joined as a paying member you cannot really make moral judgements about this work.
if you get together with her for real then possibly you could reasonably say you are not happy with her working here but then it would be up to you to help support her while she gets other work which may not pay as well as she is used to.

RE: about fliring girls

i'm in the same situation but the host who is my gf works in non-adult ,its even more stress :(

Reply

RE: about fliring girls

but at least you know she wouldn't be breaking the rules and doing rude things in 121 so there is less to be jealous of :) - so surely the only stress is worrying about people being rude to her which i think would always be a concern when she is working somewhere like this

Reply

RE: about fliring girls

why less to worry, alot off non-adult go nude in 121 ,so alot to worry about.

Reply

RE: about fliring girls

well basically, being realistic - you must know whether she does adult shows for you. if she doesn't and she is your gf then surely she is not doing them for someone who is not her bf!
if she does them for you then she probably does them for some others (whether a select few who are nice to her or for anyone who is prepared to stay in nonadult 121 long enough) but that still doesn't mean there is the same emotional involvement that there is with you. if she did adult shows for you before you were her bf then realistically you know she will still be doing them now.
i really do not see the problem as long as she is not saying to everyone that she loves them too or meeting up with members in real life behind your back - she is trying to earn money for a better life. does it matter if that involves her taking her clothes off in the safety of her home/studio to some strangers over the internet? i am sure most hosts do not feel any great emotional involvement with most members and so she is not likely to run off with someone else here - probably the chances of her meeting some nice bloke in real life are much greater than the chance of her throwing away a relationship with you for another member.

yes, i have been in this sort of situation - but from another site - was not jealous really of other members but must say it was a pain sitting around for hours in the middle of the night at a computer waiting for long videos to finish to see/chat to her again - didn't work sadly because i am still in another relationship and i was not trusting enough to end this relationship for someone who i sadly had some doubts over as to whether she was after money rather than me (and to be honest am still not really sure whether i was right or wrong). she no longer works as a host though as she hated the work and the rude guests wanting free shows etc - but good luck to you and i hope it works out

RE: about fliring girls

Interesting post and good comments from both sides actually. I am wondering if the OP meant he did not trust the girl or not. I am also curious how their relationship is. Are they working towards a future together or is this 100% a cyber relationship. If this is a relationship with a future, with plans in motion and equal feelings on both sides, I can understand for sure how hard it is to sit there, more so in adult then non but why split hairs. I am not sure if jealousy is the proper explanation or not of the feeling, but for lack of a better one at the moment it will do. If OP your concerns are based on a lack of trust then 100% just move on, won’t be good for either one of you unless you can fix it fast. If you both plan a future together in real life, then I advise you work this out fast and get on with real life quickly.

RE: about fliring girls

You never took her in video? Why? I bet she is doing adult shows in vid and you were too cheap to find out, how long can you keep your head in the sand?

Reply

RE: about fliring girls

I would say a bit of jealousy of other members is natural. When I am in love with a girl I can get jealous of anyone who is with her when I can't be. What is dangerous is when your jealousy starts to make you doubt her. To me these sort of posts show the difference between male and female thinking. Guys always seem so bothered about what the girl they love does in her adult shows. In fact if she is in adult the more time she spends stripping the better. You will never lose her to the members who come to vid and immediately demand she gets naked. If you are going to worry it should be about the guys who spend ages chatting with her where there is a possibility of a genuine relationship developing.
You have to learn to accept that what she does here is work and make it clear to her that you accept it. If you start to push her about what she does or does not do in shows she may feel pressured into lying to you about it because she is scared of losing you. Do not doubt her unless she gives you reason to. And I mean genuine reasons. If you are always looking for reasons it is always possible to find them.

Beauty

I have seen some posts in the past about who is the most beautiful host here.
I am curious to hear from both host and members, what do you consider beauty??
For me it is not just an outward thing. Inner beauty has a good habit of radiating outward making someone even more beautiful.
Some years back I met a model, she was considered to be a very beautiful lady, but she was a nasty person. Those around her were beneath her. She had a better then attitude which was not beautiful at all. It was such a strong thing with her that it over shadowed her outer beauty.
I have read some posts here about how people think that they cannot be loved in real life or they are afraid that someone wont love them the same, because the cam, make up, lighting and such makes them more beautiful than they are in real life. My thought is, if the person really does love you then they will see you as beautiful no matter what.
For my love, I find you beautiful both inside and out. Your heart is filled with such love, compassion, passion and kindness that it radiates such warmth to this world! God has blessed you my smiley eyed angel!

Well in my opinion the most important thing for a woman (i mean about her appearance) is to be groomed. Hair, skin, always neat clothes..And there is one saying that is i think very true-if a woman is not beautiful after 30 yo then she doesn't want to be beautiful. To be beautiful we just have to look after ourselves. This is my opinion:)

RE: Beauty

It is woman's natural desire to be beautiful, her calling and her weak spot (never say her she's not beautiful even if she tells u she has that or this lack) I agree that if the person really does love you then they will see you as beautiful no matter what. But if a woman continue to be capricious about her appearance, let it be so, bcoz it's her privilege :D ...the only thing what she wants to hear is that u really love her as she is.
A beautiful woman is a shining woman. That shines comes from inside and has a pulling power, so when she smiles it is the most beautiful smile (even though her teeth ain't ideal) When she laughs it is the most pleasant tune for u, when she looks at you, u can sink in the depth of her eyes. That's why u may find any romantic poem describing beauty of the woman who that poet is in love with and it fits to ANY woman in the world who U love! :P

RE: Beauty

AniAngel,

Wow! This place is turning into a Philosophy Forum! Two philosophical questions in a row: What is happiness and now What is beauty. The question about happiness is difficult and a bit elusive, but the question of beauty even more so. More often than not discussions about beauty are limited to two basic thoughts: 1) The subjective nature of beauty and 2) Outer vs. inner beauty.

As regards the first line of thinking, well worn expressions such as "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...With taste there is no quarreling, etc." are often used to answer the question, but at bottom they fail to do so. In effect, such statements suggest that the question of beauty is entirely subjective and therefore cannot be answered. This of course forecloses the possibility of identifying any objective elements by which to evaluate beauty. Thus if you like a certain painting and I do not, the case is closed on the grounds that it all boils down to individual taste. We therefore stop short of analyzing aspects of beauty, both its outward manifestation and its hidden underpinnings.

The second line of thinking usually sets up an either/or dichotomy between inner and outer beauty. The high minded usually dismiss outer beauty in favor of what they call “true” or “real” beauty. But are these two forms of beauty mutually exclusive? And is physical beauty to be dismissed (or denied) as the inferior step child of real beauty, which always springs from within? Again, as with the well-worn expressions above, one can make many convincing arguments, but they don’t get us where want to go. The dialogue stops well short of answering the question, “What is beauty?” Rather than attempting to get to the essence of the question, it simply asserts that one form of beauty is the “true” beauty and the other is not. (It is curious, indeed ironic, that most people think of those with beautiful souls, more 'substantial' than those who are only outwardly beautiful.) But there is no formal argument made. It is merely asserted. Once again, case closed and we are no closer to answering our question.

Truth is, as some here have suggested, both outer (physical) and inner (spiritual) beauty are instances of beauty. So rather than regard one as real and the other as mere appearance and therefore bogus, why not ask if we can identify any elements that outer and inner beauty hold in common? After all, we do use the same word to describe both its outer and inner manifestations.

So, do a beautiful body and a beautiful soul share common elements? I believe they do. I think Gorty hit on one such element when she mentioned “harmony.” Is there not something harmonious and consonant about a beautiful body, just as there is in a beautiful soul? Another thought is from the American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, who wrote, “Euclid alone looked on beauty bare,” which suggests that the essence of beauty is to be found in its underlying structures, more specifically geometric symmetry.

In sum, beauty has something to do with harmony and symmetry and we call something “beautiful” that is well ordered, i.e. harmonious and symmetrical. No doubt there are other elements (e.g. balance) that are common to inner and outer beauty. Any thoughts?

Reply

RE: Beauty

maybe beauty & happiness are actually entwined.beauty in all its forms makes us happy & happiness makes us & is beautiful...

Reply

RE: Beauty

There's no doubt that beauty can be uplifting and the ugly a burden. I know that when I am in a beautiful environment, surrounded by beautiful architecture, I feel good and when I am in an ugly and soulless place, like an ugly suburb, I have a physical and emotional aversion to it!

Likewise, when I am around people who are happy and satisfied, their spirit has a positive effect on me, whereas the opposite is true when I am around unhappy people. Those who are genuinely happy exude an undeniable beauty. So, yes, there is obviously some relationship between beauty and happiness.

And how about "truth?" What relation, if any, does it have to beauty and/or happiness?

RE: what is it happiness?

Pamella,

Your question is one of the biggies---one of the perennial philosophical questions. In fact, St. Augustine said, "Man has no reason to philosophize, except with a view to happiness."

I don't agree that happiness is something to be found only in the moment, or the present. Although I do agree with you that we only live, strictly speaking, in the moment. We cannot change the past and we can never be sure of the future, but it seems to me that true happiness must abide and can't be such a fleeting thing like a "mood" , so fragile that it cannot stand up to disappointments.

Having said that, it is certainly true that our happiness can be dashed by tragedy and that is why Sophocles said, "Let no man's life be counted happy until he is dead." We could be happy for 98% of our lives, but struck with a tragic blow at the end. And few could remain happy in such a circumstance.

Happiness is certainly hard to define, but it is clearly something we all value as a supreme good. Aristotle claims happiness is the greatest of all goods, because it is an end in itself and it is the thing toward which so many other goods aim. He says, for example, people pursue wealth (or fame or honors) in order to be happy, but no one pursues happiness in order to be wealthy. Happiness is the final aim. Without going into his whole argument Aristotle offers a definition of happiness. He says it is "an activity of the soul in conformity with virtue."

Thanks for posting this question for our consideration.

RE: what is it happiness?

Strange you mention St. Augusine. The other day I was wondering what his view of CC would be. Considering in one of his prayers he asks to be granted chastity, but not yet. He'd probably be a viewer until his prayers were answered I suppose.

Reply

RE: what is it happiness?

Lol JC! "Lord make me chaste, but not yet." That has always been one of my favorite lines of Augustine too! In fact, there is a wonderful new translation of the "Confessiones" by Garry Wills. Wills' commentary is also wonderful and enlightening. Wills says it is really wrong to translate the Latin "Confessiones" as Confessions, since for the modern reader the word "confession" conveys a kind of tell-all baring of one's soul, like when we speak of the "confessional poets." However, he says the word really is best translated as "Testimony," since confessiones really means to give voice or testimony about a matter of belief. This is the way the Nicene Creed uses the word in the line, "Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum." ("I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.")

I think Augustine is often thought of as some dusty religious figure whose thinking was largely narrow and pious invocations of God's name and a lot of breast beating for human sinfulness. Surely there is some of that. It was the 4th century after all! But the "Confessiones" is extraordinarily rich and broad in its sweep. Indeed in Book One his thoughts on language and language development are still regarded as important and insightful in the field of Linguistics. So, he was a heavy dude!---though I'm sure his fellow churchmen did not address the Bishop of Hippo as "Dude," probably "Excellency Dude." lol!

But who cares to read Augustine in this age when they could be reading something much more edifying---like NY Post stories about Brittany and J-Lo! God help us!

Glass, Since you offered your opinion, will you be so kind as to say what, precisely, is all "bullocks?" Do you mean the question itself, that the question doesn't matter? I assume you desire happiness for yourself like everyone else, right? And assuming that is true, are you saying that the question of your own personal happiness is just a part of the "bullocks?" I ask you this in earnest. I am not being sarcastic.

P.S. Engineers' joke: Guy #1: the glass is half empty. Guy #2: the glass is half full. Engineer: you guys have the wrong size glass. Cheers :)

RE: 8 march

Gorty, You have for some days now remarked that Spring has arrived where you are. I have always assumed you are in Russia. Are you further South?--Ukraine perhaps? Here (mid-Atlantic US) winter is still upon us; indeed it snowed yesterday. And the flower and bird--crocus and the robin--that signal the arrival of Spring have yet to be seen. Just a matter of weeks, however. All the best! :)

RE: 8 march

I meant that I cannot imagine Spring being in bloom in Russia, but perhaps further South, like the Ukraine. My remark about Mid Atlantic US was independent of my curiosity about her location.:)

RE: 8 march

International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world.
When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.
International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. In ancient Greece, Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to end war; during the French Revolution, Parisian women calling for "liberty, equality, fraternity" marched on Versailles to demand women's suffrage.

HAVE A GREAT DAY LADIES!! HOPE YOU ALL WILL TAKE THE DAY OFF TODAY!!!

Respect

Members dont respect hosts. They are kids. They are from a poorer country. They don't deserve any respect. They don't respect themselves by working here so why should I. I pay them good money. They want respect too?

Host dont respect members. They are way older than me. They are from richer countries and think they are special. They dont deserve my respect. They dont respect themselves coming here so why should I? I show them my body. They want respect too?

everyone should respect everyone no matter what they do,where they are from, how rich or poor they are.it doesn't matter.respect goes a long way in making you a better person.show respect and you will in turn be shown respect.

Reply

RE: Respect

wrong.

just because you show respect towards someone does not mean you will recieve it in return. the same goes for other aspects such as kindness, generosity, compassion etc etc.. with the possibly exception of negative aspects such as anger, hate etc.

if you believe that people will treat you how you treat them (with regards to respect and other positive aspects) then you're gonna be disappointed =-/

I agree with Anne also. Respect is a mutual thing. If you do not give someone respect you should not expect them to return it. Respect is something that is earned with how you are with people, not something that is automatic. Of course you are going to run across those in life who are only about themselves and will not show others respect, compassion, caring or understanding.

Thank you....an IMPORTANT Question.

Q,

You bring up an important question that is not discussed enough. CC does its part by posting standards of decorum, but as we all know this doesn't stop some from hurling insults and ignoring a basic regard for respecting one another. If someone disagrees with us, it is not a justification for attacking that person personally. Sadly too many apparently think it is!

You are not the first, of course, to bring up this important topic. See, for example, the 12 Feb post by "a friend:) " and the 13 Feb post by "why can't everyone be nice???" In the former "friend" posted his (her?) displeasure with someone's rank criticism of a non-English speaker's English skills and her appearance. His complaint was warranted, but ironically he proceeded to call such posters "trash...fleas..etc." The irony apparently escaped him. What’s more, having set the tone for the thread, a Jerry-Springer-style mud slinging contest ensued.

As regards your observation re: the mutual disrespect you see in both directions, I would simply observe I do not believe it is 50-50. From my experience as a guest and having spoken about this subject with many hosts, my sense is there is more disrespect coming from guests than the other way around. This is not because hosts are inherently more virtuous or well-mannered than guests. It is a function of the economic reality here---which you touch on in your brief synopsis of both arguments that both sides use to justify their lack of simple respect for the 'other.'

Many guests—sadly many of whom are my fellow Americans---feel because they are the “payers” this gives them the right to be abusive to the host. As they see it, they have just bought the services of a “ho” who is a mere animated commodity for their amusement or masturbatory fantasy. What they fail to realize is that they too are a part of the equation. They may fancy that they are enjoying the perverse pleasure of degrading a woman, but they are entirely oblivious to how they are likewise degraded. One perceptive host told me that among the “stupid” and most maddening questions posed by the run-of-the-mill idiots that patronized her was, “What’s a nice girl like you doing working here?” Realizing, of course, that income was at stake, she did not express her outrage, but did occasionally respond by saying, “Well, what are YOU doing here?”

It seems to me that in all human relations we need not respect people for what they do or what they think, but we are bound to respect each for what we are: human beings. There is no getting around that. We can call each other vulgar, dehumanizing names [which has always been the mark of hateful, racist, sexist, xenophobic language], but after all the dust is settled, the object of our hatred is no less human than ourselves. And to deny that person’s (or group’s) humanity [yes even someone as repugnant as Hitler] is to deny our own.

Reply

RE: Thank you....an IMPORTANT Question.

Well the irony did not escape me, and it was actually out of character for me to respond in that manner, but at that point of time I was sick and tired of those who felt the need to belittle someone because of their language skills, intelligence or whatever other choice of the day there is! Nice to see you read my posts though. :) Hope you have enjoyed the others.

Yes, even I have noticed a few more gems amongst the rough ;)

It is nice to have reasoned debate in the forums once is a while and not constant bashing of a persons, race, country, language skills etc etc. I do recall , long time back now, I made a particularly vitriolic stand against the most overt forms of bigotry seen on CC. Followed immediately but trolls trying to set fire to more threads in an attempt to wind me up, something that has yet to occur. If only for the one simple reason that anyone with such abhorrent views never dare actually stand up and be judged for their supposed opinions.

That being said, in terms of respect, I think we all deserve it if we've earned it. Just a question of showing true colours and fessing up to who you really are. I always make it a point to let people know I appreciate them being straight with me after all.

Plastic money.. no joke

The currency - Notes
When you finally get your hands on cold hard Australian cash, the first thing you might notice is that the notes are plastic. Don't worry, someone hasn't slipped you toy money as a trick - it's all part of a scheme to make money last longer and be less susceptible to forgery. At least, that's the theory.

Plastic money, along with self-adhesive stamps, are two of the things we keep getting told are a world first. It's either because we're so in front of the rest of the world with this technology - or because it's a stupid idea that nobody else wanted to do.

4. The currency - Coins
The other thing you'll notice is that there's no 1 or 2 cent coins. These days, cash prices are all rounded to the nearest 5 cents. So you won't have so much fiddly small change in your pocket. Or if you do, it'll be worth more than you realise - especially when you discover the $1 and $2 coins!

The exchange rate, by the way, is about US$0.75 to the A$1, or about UK 0.48 to the A$1. Canadians are lucky, it's worth about the same. Everyone else is out of luck - I'm not going to do the whole list here. There's plenty of sites out on the Web that do, though.

5. GST
When you come to actually spend your money, depending on where you come from, you might find it easier to hand the dosh over. While there is a Goods & Services Tax applied to most... err... goods and services, unlike in some parts of the world, the price on the price sticker is what you end up paying - it's not added as an after thought at the register. Which means you can spend all the time you want examining the currency and figuring out exactly what you'll hand over to the shop assistant before you even get to the counter.

6. Tipping
Generally waiters, taxi drivers etc, get paid enough above slave labour wages that they don't expect a tip. Not that they'll resist it if you do happen to feel generous, but they won't drop a soggy sponge on your lap or drive off with your luggage if you don't.

I confess I'm not so sure about hotel doormen, porters and other blokes in big hats and bright suits. Can't say I've ever availed myself of their services.

7. Dangerous creatures - crocodiles, snakes, spiders
Indoors or outdoors, there's a load of lethal fauna just waiting to get its fangs into your flesh. Some of the things to watch out for include snakes, spiders, alligators, and documentary film crews.

If a snake or spider bites you, scream for medical help immediately. Something like "Oh Jesus Christ, I just got bitten by a snake/spider the size of a bus!!" should do the trick. If a crocodile bites you and there's enough of you left to seek medical help, then by all means, also seek medical help.

Documentary film crews are generally harmless as long as you stay in focus and don't go too near the camera.

And if you do need emergency help, the number to call from any phone is 000. Just think "oooh, I need help!"*

8. Sunscreen
The hole in the ozone layer may be getting slightly smaller these days, but it's still there. And even if it wasn't, the sun packs enough of a punch to make picking up skin cancer easier in Australia than just about anywhere else in the world. So if you'll be in the sunshine for more than 4.5 milliseconds, especially in the summer, make sure you slop on a generous dollop of sunscreen, and even better, a shirt and hat will help too.

9. Driving on the left
Unless you come from Great Britain or Japan or one of those other countries where cars drive on the left of the street, this may confuse you for a few days. You'll find yourself getting into the wrong side of the car, or if you're attempting to drive, maybe even driving on the wrong side.

You might also find yourself looking the wrong way before you cross the street, and don't be too surprised if occasional outbursts like "hey, that dog's driving a car!" pass your lips*. But you'll get used to it. Just remember: Right is wrong, and left is right.

10. Electricity
Electricity in Australia is 240 volts. What this means is that if you come from a country where the electricity is a wimpy 110 volts, and you try to plug something in, all sorts of fun stuff might happen.

Thankfully for international jetsetters such as yourselves, most shavers, camcorders and other travel necessities are equipped with incredibly sophisticated electronics to enable them to work with different voltages. You'll still need a power point adapter to cope with the weird and arcane arrangement of pins - these are easily obtainable for about $8-9 from shops selling travellers' paraphernalia.

Question for UK

UK, When you say, "As the sun rises first over on that side of the world...," are you simply referring to the fact that for the Southern Hemisphere it is now Summer (hence the days are longer) or are you saying....hmmm I don't know. What ARE you saying? I'm curious.

Reply

RE: Question for UK

not summer here now melomane.its autumn or fall as you call it.our seasons are opposite to yours.

Reply

RE: Question for UK

thingy, I understand the seasons are opposite: Summer in the Northern Hemspshere is Winter in the Southern Hemisphere, etc. But unless you are living on another planet the vernal and autumnal equininox mark the change of the seasons. That means our Spring and your Autumn do not begin until approx. March 21. Agreed?

RE: Plastic money.. no joke

Gete,

It's interesting you should bring up the matter of currency. Just the other day here in the US I heard a piece on the radio about the challenges of the future facing the government---presumably all governments, not just the US---in regard of counterfeiting. With the advent of the digital age of reproduction counterfeiters will be able to make not only good copies of currency, but identical ones.

This brings up the matter of the "plastic currency" of which you speak. From the report I heard it would appear you Aussies are in the vanguard. The US Gov. guy suggested that since counterfeiters will be capable of making identical copies of notes, the future will require official notes will have to be made of materials--such as plastic---that can transmogrify, i.e. literally change shape in the hand of the bearer! The test of authenticity will have something to do with the internal microchips' capacity for changing the given shape into some shape that passes the muster of a test that proves it isn't counterfeit!

Money is a curious thing in its own right. One economist described it as, “a dream that all of mankind is having at once.” Dream or no dream, see if the ticket guy at the movies will give you one if you don’t have the money! Still, it’s a far cry from mankind’s earliest use money, or something to represent value. We no longer exchange cattle or crops. The use of paper money has long supplanted coins and the idea that paper money is backed by an equivalent of silver or gold has long been abandoned as a fiction. It was even a fiction in my childhood when the US one dollar bill still said at the bottom, “Silver Certificate. Payable to the bearer on demand.” Coins previously made of precious metals are now made of compounds or contain no precious metal at all!

Money, like so many aspects of experience, has become more and more abstract. (In fact one host here told me she found CC comforting because she could “abstract” herself. I’m sure she meant “distract”, but it seems to be ‘right on the money’—no pun intended—here!) Money is now a largely intangible electronic affair. Billions of dollars, euros, yen, Swiss francs, pounds, etc. are traded daily around the world, yet there is not so much as a shred of paper or a coin that is physically exchanged. Bonds are issued that represent debt. Then there are “derivatives” which “derive” their value from these already secondary representations of worth. They are, in effect, abstractions of abstractions. Indeed the world’s bankers are so convinced by the tangibleness of derivatives that some years ago a Nobel Prize was awarded to an economist for his work on derivatives. This prompted Barron’s astute and humorous columnist, Alan Ableson, to remark, “Awarding a Nobel Prize for derivatives is like awarding the Nobel Prize in Literature for his work on commas.” Lol!

So, it’s a ‘brave new world.’ As the French say, “Bon courage!”

wikipedia says:
"In 1983, Costa Rica and Haiti issued the first Tyvek and the Isle of Man issued the first Bradvek polymer (or plastic) banknotes"

and:
"They were first issued in the 1960s, by such tropical climates as Sierra Leone and Tonga in an attempt to avoid the tendency of traditional water-activated stamps to stick together in humid conditions. They also made diecutting into fanciful and unique shapes easier.
"The United States Postal Service's first foray into self-adhesive stamps was in 1974 with the 10-cent dove weathervane."
