1. Since we measure heat rather than cold, the "twice as cold" would actually be "half as warm".

The whole concept of draining water reversing direction at the equator is a myth. The phenomena often related to the claim is know as the "Coriolis Effect" which is the influence of the earths rotation on moving bodies such as storms, ie: hurricanes. Cheers

I'm sorry, but the "whole concept" isn't a myth. It may be small, but the Coriolis Effect does indeed partially affect the direction of draining water. Other conditions usually exert much higher influence, sure, but to completely negate any influence of the Coriolis Effect at all is simply wrong.

Just had to find that out - so I'm just back from my travels.
I decided to go to Ecuador to test the effect because Kenya has wild animals that like to eat people and Uganda and its neighbouring countries could have have wild people who would probably like to machete me.
After a 14 hour journey I landed in Quito in Ecuador, where I hired 2 guides and, as I don't like to be unprepared, 4 donkeys to carry my extensive supplies which I mostly managed to get locally but some other items had to be ordered in from the US, adding a few days wait.
Eventually we were ready and, after 3 days of slow progress (due largely to a bout of dysentery and one of the female donkeys being in season causing the male donkey to mount her and shed his load several times), we found ourselves on the South Slope of Volcán Cayambe where, after careful checking with my trusty Sat Nav, I made sure we were positioned exactly on the equator and we set up camp.
At noon on a nice calm day I got out the 20 litres of water I had set aside and a flat lollipop stick to float in it and watch any rotational effect...... but imagine my disbelief when I went to the supply tent and discovered I couldn't carry out the experiment.... I'd only gone and packed everything but the kitchen sink .....

Age Old Question

Get a clue. How is it innocent if she admits in the post below yours that IF she told her husband he would likely divorce her? If he doesn't want to be a swinger and go to clubs and see her with another partner then it means he's trying to stay committed to their marriage, so she should do the same. If details about your character or the situation were so important to you then why did you leave them out of your post? Choice? Perhaps, but the reference to choice was related to whether the man would have made the same decision if he had known. The host , in her acknowledgment of "hoping did didn't find out", seemed to think that knowledge might have altered his decision. While he certainly had the option of "to poke" or "not to poke" , the previous posters comment I believe is valid, in that the man was deceived by someone with an agenda which disregarded the potential impact on another. If you think this is a stretch, imagine what might have happened to the guy if the host's husband had caught them in the act. Then again, you may be pals with the host and, in an attempt to be chivalrous, are attempting to deflect criticism. :)

That rule is actually just the short version. The i before e, except after c rule only applies to digraphs, so "science" is an exception to the rule and doesn't really count. There are more exceptions as well.

The 'i' before 'e' and similar similar spelling / pronunciation rules do not hold when the 2 letters in question are parts of different syllables. In this case, 'science' has 2 syllables with the 'i' in the first and the 'e' in the second. It would also not hold for any word starting with the prefixes of multi-, quasi-, etc. followed by an 'e'.
