Each to his own taste, right? I understand why more, shall I say "ample" women take offense to people who make fun of their weight, but this is a near universal reaction and this cannot be remedied by the legislation of political correctness. 60% of the American population is obese (principally because they eat too much), yet there is a hostile contingent among this group that is ready to sue if anyone should make a derogatory comment about them. I agree such comments are hurtful and it's not right to say such things. However, such comments are not the grievous offenses that they are made out to be.

A friend of mine from Suriname (the former Dutch Guiana) told me of a humorous exchange between a bus driver in the Capital city of Paramaribo: A very fat women got on the bus and upon seeing this magnificent woman the driver exclaimed, "Oh wow lady, you're gonna pay double for that!" She was used to such remarks, took it in stride and greeted his humor with humor. Life goes on. I can well imagine such a remark made in the US resulting in a lawsuit. It happens all the time. In fact, litigation reaches laughable extremes. I remember reading about a case of a very obese person suing a movie theatre chain because the seats would not accommodate him. Likewise, obese people have responded with outrage (and I think litigation) over an airline company's recent decision to require people over a certain weight to purchase two seats.

I wish your characterization of the origins of eating disorders was that simple. No doubt the whole image thing (thin is good; fat is bad) perpetuated by advertising is a contributing factor, but it’s not as simple as that. There are many social and cultural factors, among them, class, gender, as well as complex emotional and psycho-sexual dynamics that contribute to the etiology of eating disorders.

That said, let me end on a lighter note with a politically incorrect joke:

I understand your displeasure, indeed your moral outrage, with those who put down people's English skills or another's appearance. Such behavior says more about them than those they criticize. Their ignorance is self-indicting and in my opinion nothing more needs to be said, though I would defend the right of anyone who has been a target of such an assault to defend herself. I do not say if someone pisses in your face, you should thank him. But I do say if we object to such behavior, our response should be measured and we should, as best possible, try to remain above the fray. Consider the source and do not give into the understandable impulse to stoop to their level. How often in such matters I think of my grandmother’s wisdom. How ironic that this thread bears the title, “Respect!” Reading through it, I don’t see much evidence of it. Many people make valid points, but it’s hard to have a civil discussion in the midst of a mudslinging contest. The general tone here makes it seem more like a virtual Jerry Springer Show than a serious exchange about the need to be respectful of others. If there is a better way to communicate how to behave than by example, I don’t know of it.

I admire anyone who learns a language other than his native tongue. Unfortunately, Americans (and most native Anglophones) are woefully bad about learning foreign languages and they often are the first ones to criticize a non-native speaker’s less-than-perfect English. If they were to make a serious attempt to learn another language or if they lived in a country where English was not the native tongue, they might be a little more humble. Not only that they would learn more about their own tongue and about the nature of language in general. There’s a German expression which translates, “He who does not know a second language knows nothing of his own.” How true! And how much richer a life is when one has more than one lens from which to see the world. As the French say, “Apprendre une langue est vivre de nouveau,” (To learn a language is to live anew) !

no, i didn't "turn my anger on him", I expressed my annoyance to someone who seems to quite obviously regard himself as someone better than the people he's insulting. highlighting the similarities between what he's doing and what they're doing, i would think a rational person who thinks himself so much the better would stop. if he were to simply ignore those who like to make fun of him, i doubt there would be much sport in continuing to make fun of him, don't you think?
